1981年、 国頭村(くにがみそん)で発見された、世界でやんばるの森だけに棲む、日本で唯一の飛べない鳥ヤンバルクイナ、絶滅危惧種である。2021年現在1700羽ほどしかいない。

やんばるの森の土地を半世紀以上、訓練場として使用していたアメリカ軍が残した大量の廃棄物がそのまま放置されています。２０１６年の返還後、防衛省は税金を使い１年をかけて米軍廃棄物の撤去を実施したはずでした。しかし、今なおアメリカ軍の残した廃棄物が次々と出てくるのが実情です。
